Min Lokal on George St, Fitzroy is one of those places that could so easily fall prey to being annoyingly hipster… after all, the cafe takes the form of a tiny weatherboard house. You literally down your eggs-with-sides in someone’s former lounge room. Thankfully though, there is not a trace of obligatory hipsterness anywhere. Though the waiters are bohemian enough in their appearance, they are not at all sullen and even seem (dare I say) happy to be serving people.
The thing that grabs you on the menu is the sides: mushrooms “with thyme,” avocado “with lemon,” green tomato chutney. These subtle additions ensure each dish on offer does not become of the every day.
I sampled poached eggs with chorizo, spinach and green tomato chutney. A sweet balsamic glaze brought it all together nicely. The eggs were excellently cooked and sensible portion sizes meant I didn’t roll out of the cafe in regret afterwards.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that Min Lokal is chic — but not in a conscious or pretentious way. It’s also quiet and spacious — no waiting forty minutes for a table here.
The coffee here is also very good, with both sweet and bitter undertones.
